The Amgen Irish Open is set to grace the Royal County Down in 2024, marking a key event on the DP World Tour. This prestigious competition will unfold on the acclaimed Newcastle links from 12 to 15 September 2024.
The schedule for the 2024 DP World Tour has undergone significant changes, incorporating “five innovative Global Swings.” As part of “Phase Two – The Back Nine,” the Irish Open will feature among the tour’s most esteemed tournaments and national opens, which are scheduled between August and October.
The Irish Open, boasting a prize fund of $6 million (£5.1m), will make its return to Royal County Down after a nine-year hiatus. The last occasion was in 2015 when Denmark’s Søren Kjeldsen triumphed over Eddie Pepperell and Bernd Weisberger in a thrilling play-off, clinching the trophy handed over by the then-host, Rory McIlroy.

Northern Ireland last welcomed the Irish Open in 2020 at Galgorm during the Covid-19 pandemic, where American John Catlin emerged victorious. Previously, the event took place at Portstewart in 2017 with Ryder Cup star John Rahm taking the title, and at Royal Portrush in 2012, won by Jamie Donaldson.
Following its 2023 stint at The K Club in Straffan, Dublin, where Sweden’s Vincent Norman was declared the champion, the 2024 Irish Open will shift to the north. Renowned players like McIlroy, Shane Lowry, and Padraig Harrington competed at The K Club, and another stellar lineup is anticipated at Royal County Down. This event will occur just one week prior to the Tour’s marquee event, The BMW PGA Championship, at Wentworth.
Mourne Golf Club, situated in Newcastle and affiliated with both Royal County Down and the Royal County Down Ladies’ Golf Club, forms an integral part of this golfing hub.
During the tournament week, Mourne Golf Club will welcome all visitors and members, offering a range of food and beverages throughout the day, alongside a comprehensive schedule of entertainment, details of which will be announced in due course.
The 2024 Irish Open is poised to be a week-long festival of golf, with Mourne Golf Club eagerly anticipating the arrival of guests next September.
