Rory McIlroy has confirmed his participation in this year’s Irish Open, set to be hosted at Royal County Down from September 12-15. This marks the venue’s second hosting of the tournament and the first since 2015.
Having missed the cut in the 2015 event, the four-time Major champion is eager to make a stronger impression this year in front of a home crowd. McIlroy, who secured the Irish Open title at the K Club in 2016, expressed his enthusiasm about returning to Royal County Down.
Reflecting on his longstanding engagement with the event, McIlroy commented, “Having first competed in the Irish Open nearly two decades ago, it has always been a pivotal tournament for me, but returning this year feels particularly significant. The proximity of Royal County Down to where I grew up makes it even more special. My fond memories of competing in the 2007 Walker Cup here add to my excitement.”

He continued, “The support from local fans is phenomenal, creating an unmatched atmosphere that boosts all Irish players. I’m eagerly anticipating the energy and encouragement from the crowd once again this year.”
McIlroy has begun the 2024 season impressively, securing a runner-up spot at the Dubai Invitational and clinching his fourth title at the Dubai Desert Classic at Emirates Golf Club last weekend.
The last time Royal County Down hosted the event, Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen triumphed, edging out England’s Eddie Pepperell and Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger in a playoff.
Sweden’s Vincent Norrman, last year’s champion, secured his second DP World Tour title at the event. Notable competitors this year include past champions such as Shane Lowry. Tickets for the tournament are already available for purchase.
